Hispanic Heritage Month

St. Rose of Lima is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on October 13! Our committee has prepared a variety of fun, educational, and exciting activities for students to explore the rich culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic people around the world.

Throughout the celebration, students will:

  • Discover the traditions and customs of various Hispanic countries
  • Read books by renowned Hispanic authors
  • Create and appreciate beautiful artwork inspired by Hispanic culture
  • Learn and experience traditional Hispanic dances

The week will end with a morning of tasting a variety of foods from different Hispanic countries.  We’re looking forward to a meaningful and memorable celebration as we honor and learn more about the diverse Hispanic heritage that enriches our community and world

Counselor’s Corner

I hope everything went well this week with conferences. Please remember that you can reach out to me if you would like additional resources, or information to help your child find success here at St. Rose.

This week in our lessons in Kindergarten, First, and Second grade classes, we introduced or reviewed how students can use “A Bug and a Wish” statements to practice solving their own problems or resolving conflicts. I told them they can even practice using it at home with their siblings so they become more comfortable using it in other places. I also explained that their younger siblings may not truly understand how to use the process appropriately, but it can help them practice. We also discussed what it means to use a firm voice, but it’s not the same as yelling. I explained that it means they are serious and they ‘mean business.’

Mrs. Smith’s students reviewed ‘Bucketfilling’ and listened to the story,
Buckets, Dippers, and Lids by Carol McCloud. Since most of them have been learning about Bucketfilling since Kindergarten, I focused more on the concept of using the “lid” to protect themselves and others when someone is being hurtful or unkind. We talked about how they can stand up for others when necessary, as well as the importance of not dipping into their own buckets, and putting themselves down.

Last week, Mrs. Yinger’s class started a multi-lesson unit on Focus and attention and completed a self assessment about attention to help them better understand their own strengths and challenges. We discussed why paying attention is important, and what they believe their own biggest distractions are in the hopes of helping them become more self aware about when they need to work a little harder on focusing to help them be successful in school.

The Fifth and Sixth grade classes have begun their
Self-Awareness lessons and activities to help them gain a better understanding of how their choices affect others. This can also help them develop a stronger sense of empathy and consideration of others.

If you have any questions, please email me. I’m happy to share my resources! Enjoy the extended weekend!
